What a backyard remodel costs in 2026
A realistic breakdown of pricing for turf, hardscape, pools, and full outdoor living builds.
Nobody can quote a backyard from a blog post, and any number you read online that is presented as the price is a guess about somebody else's yard. What we can do is be straight about the range and about what moves it. Most full backyard projects with us start in the mid five figures. Smaller turf or hardscape projects are less. What follows is what decides where inside that a particular yard lands.
Scope moves the number more than materials do
The single biggest variable is how many trades the project needs. Turf alone is one crew and a short schedule. Turf with a paver patio, a pergola, lighting and planting is four scopes sequenced around each other, and the coordination is real work. Adding a pool changes the category again, because everything else has to be built around excavation and equipment. Two yards of the same size can differ by a multiple purely on how many things are happening in them.
Access is the cost nobody expects
In the Heights, Bellaire and West University, the gate is often too narrow for equipment, which means material moves by wheelbarrow through a side yard and spoil comes out the same way. That can add days of labour to work that would take hours on an open lot in Katy or Fulshear. It is the first thing we look at on site, and it is the most common reason two comparable designs price differently.
Drainage is not an upgrade, it is a prerequisite
On clay, a patio or a lawn built over water that has nowhere to go will move. Correcting grade or installing drainage is frequently a line on the proposal, and it is not the line to cut. Skipping it does not save money, it defers the cost to the day the paving needs relaying. If your budget will not stretch to both, we would rather do the drainage now and the patio next year.
Material choice sets the finish level, within a band
Flagstone, travertine, poured concrete and pavers span a wide range in supply cost, and the labour differs too, because a hand-set irregular stone takes far longer than a modular paver. That said, material is usually a smaller share of a full build than people assume. Moving from a mid to a high specification typically shifts a project by a fraction, where adding a whole new scope shifts it by a multiple.
Designing in 3D first is what stops change orders
Every project starts with a photorealistic rendering of the finished yard, which is where the expensive decisions get made and unmade. Changing a patio's shape in the model costs an afternoon. Changing it once the base is compacted costs a rebuild. The design step is the main reason our proposals tend to hold, and it is why we do it before anybody signs for construction.
Phasing is a legitimate way to build
A yard does not have to arrive in one piece. We regularly design the whole thing, build the elements that everything else depends on first, which usually means grading, drainage and hardscape, then return for turf, planting, lighting or a pool later. It costs somewhat more in total than a single mobilisation, and it lets people build the yard they actually want instead of a smaller version of it.
You get an itemized proposal, and financing if you want it
After the free consultation, the proposal breaks out what each part of the work costs, so you can see the trade and decide what stays. There are no allowances that quietly grow later. We also work with financing providers if spreading the cost makes the difference between the right build and a compromised one, and we will talk that through at the consultation rather than at signing.
If you want a number for your yard rather than a range for somebody else's, the consultation is free and it ends with a design and an itemized proposal. Bring the wish list. We will tell you what it costs and what we would do first.
