Fixing a soggy Houston backyard

Why Houston yards flood and the drainage solutions that actually keep your landscape dry.

A yard that holds water for two days after a storm is not unlucky, and it is usually not one problem. Houston combines three things that each cause standing water on their own: dense clay that absorbs very little, lots that were graded flat, and rain that arrives faster than any soil could take it. Fixing it starts with working out which of the three is doing the most damage in your yard, because the wrong fix installed well still leaves you with a wet lawn.

1

Find out where the water comes from before you dig

Go outside during a real storm, not after one. Water that sheets across the lawn from a neighbouring property is a grading problem. Water that pools in one low spot is a contour problem. Water that appears along the house within minutes is almost always the gutters. Water that is still there two days later when the surface has drained is a soil problem. Each of those has a different fix, and the puddle looks identical in all four cases.

2

Start with the downspouts, because it is nearly free

A Houston roof sheds an enormous volume in a single storm, and most downspouts release it a foot from the foundation into the exact soil that cannot take it. Extending them, or better, tying them into a solid pipe that carries the water to daylight at the front of the property, often removes half the standing water for a fraction of what a drainage system costs. We check this before quoting anything larger.

3

Regrading fixes the cause, drains manage the symptom

If the lawn falls toward the house or sits dead flat, no amount of pipe will make it behave. Re-establishing a consistent fall away from the structure moves water before it has a chance to sit. It is more disruptive than installing a drain and it usually means the lawn comes up, so it is a decision people resist. It is also the only fix that addresses why the water stopped moving in the first place.

4

French drains work, and they are frequently misused

A properly built French drain is perforated pipe in washed gravel wrapped in filter fabric, with real fall along its length and somewhere legitimate to discharge. It excels at intercepting water moving through the ground and at draining a persistently wet zone. What it cannot do is dewater an entire flat lot, and a French drain installed without fall is a gravel trench that fills up and stays full. The failures we get called to fix are almost always fall or fabric.

5

Catch basins handle the water that is already pooling

Where a low point cannot be graded out, because a patio or a mature tree or a property line is in the way, a catch basin set at the bottom of that depression and piped to daylight will empty it. These are the right tool for a defined puddle in a fixed location. They need cleaning out a couple of times a year, particularly after leaf fall, which is the part nobody mentions at the sale.

6

Choose surfaces that let water through

Every square foot of solid concrete moves its rainfall somewhere else in the yard. Permeable systems such as TRUEGRID let water pass into a gravel base instead of running off, which makes a real difference on driveways and parking areas where the paved area is large. Building the drainage into the surface is usually cheaper than paving conventionally and then managing the runoff you just created.

7

Do not solve your problem onto a neighbour

Concentrating water and discharging it over a property line causes a dispute and can cause a liability. It is also the most common shortcut in cheap drainage work. Every system we install discharges to a legitimate outfall, and if a lot genuinely has nowhere to send water, the honest answer is a dry well or retention on site rather than a pipe pointed at the fence.

Most soggy Houston yards need two of these rather than all seven, and which two is a question you answer by watching the water, not by guessing at a price. We will walk it with you and tell you if the fix is a hundred dollars of downspout extension before we quote anything bigger.
